Modern Day Poker Etiquette

Poker is a game that has been synonymous with drinking and smoking and other ill vices. Some find it hard that there are certain rules that have to be followed when dealing with the sport. Poker is a social activity. This means that there are norms to follow. Here are some of the most common ones.

When at the poker table, it is considered offensive to volunteer or give advice to another player. Any opinions, suggestions and comments are best left unsaid. This rule is enforced all the more when a player has folded and is merely watching the game. Players who ignore this rule usually do it so that they gain an advantage over the other players. This is not fair is not done. Advice can be extended to the dealer or to onlookers of the game, but not to the players.

Most players know the action to take almost after they have received their cards. One can either bluff, call or fold. Whatever the case may be, stalling to decide is frowned upon and generally irritates the players. One shouldn't rush to fold even if it not their turn yet. Waiting for one's turn may show another hand that is weaker.

Any player that acts prematurely risks their hand being known by other players. When one acts out of turn, too much information that could lead to the players fall is revealed and humiliates the player at the same time. One who constantly engages in this act would find themselves booted out of the game quicker that one can say "fold".

Online poker rooms now have a feature that prevents players from prematurely taking action before the next round and before the next player. This is done amidst complaints from serious players who cannot stand players who try and outplay them by betting ahead. One thing that could be learned from premature players is that they are not confident in their skills and will almost certainly fold when bluffed. These are players that one could easily learn to intimidate. If one sees these players try to fold, then one knows that they have a weak hand.

Rubbing in a loss or win from a player that has folded can certainly get on ones nerves. Players that try and do this to other players are really desperate for attention and the next thing the players would notice is that no one would want to sit next to them in the following games. In poker, one leaves the go at the door.

Serving people politely pays off. Whether it be online, even if people cannot see each other, they should use the chat function to a minimum and avoid a words war with other players. Poker is meant to be a social game but there are limits as to how much free speech there should be in a poker game.

Just as a dealer deals the cards in the game, many of them are honest dealers and one thing that should be noted is that a dealer has no influence on the game whatsoever. One should not treat them as lower class people but respect them for what they do. There is no reason for players to cry foul or unfair dealing when it is clearly not the dealers fault if they got a bad hand.

Avoid bad mouthing others. This applies to the chat function stated earlier. When one abuses the chat feature, the mods or dealers of the game can easily eject the person from the game and not allow them back in. Poker is supposed to be meant for civilized people and anything rough is not allowed. Bullying statements, taunting words - these have no place in the chat feature. If someone would like to challenge another, one simply has to say it as it is and no bush beating.
